Dead Silence
Plot: (Back of Book) Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate. What they find is shocking: the Aurora, a famous luxury spaceliner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick search of the ship reveals something isn’t right.
My Review and Thoughts
I had a hard time with this book. To be honest I almost did not finish IT. It took to about the 40% mark until I started getting into it. I think my main problem was the main character Claire a.k.a. the captain. I wanted a strong willed woman character. I wanted a woman to stand her ground, but Claire was no Ripley from Alien.
She always second guest yourself and also swooned over Kane, a male member of her crew in overdramatic cliched female role type scenarios. Plus the males basically walked all over her for the majority of the book.
She played the weakling and it just soured the reality of the book, but with that negative said. There were moments of scares and suspense, moments of great mystery wonderfully written detailed moments and solid character development except for what I mentioned before.
Loved the mysterious dark and morbid atmosphere of the story.
The background playing throughout Claire's past was a solid reality. I love characters with baggage. This has a paranormal vibe to it, seeing ghost, the mystery is thick and balanced with a forbidden reality.
It has many parts that flowed with ease and there are moments when the dread plays out perfectly.
Space, spaceships, ghosts, a haunting in space. It has all that wonderful appeal of a fun spooky time.
In the end even though it took me a while, and even with the threat of not finishing it, I still felt the book was a solid read, even with it's flaws.
Would I Return to It Again: No, once was enough.
Would I Recommend: To basic sci-fi horror lovers that are looking for cliche style characters.
My Rating: 3 out of 5
Four Final Words: Spooky Sci-fi Fun. Entertaining.
