My Book Review: Books of Blood Volume 1 by Clive Barker

My Review and Thoughts:

First and foremost, Clive Barker is a master of writing.

He is a talented dark soul that weaves the world of the unknown into the lives of everyday life. Barker creates nightmares as living, breathing persona's.

I have been a huge fan my whole life. His early work are gateways into a darkness that forever changes a reader. Volume One of Books of Blood is a masterpiece of unrelenting darkness.

I first read this 16 years ago. I thought it was time to reread it and I am glad I did. Barker is a writer that is one that can be reread over and over again.

His imaginative mind and ultimate imagery of darkness, erotic nature and dark humor sticks with you and remains.

There are 5 stories in this book. Some better than others. My personal favorites are The Book of Blood and Pig Blood Blues.

Volume One is unique twisted reality that is able to grab the reader and send them into an imaginative reality of great story telling.

From moments of twisted horror, to moments of gore, to moments of comical humor to unexpected darkness. Each tale has a unique blend of disturbing imagination.

The Book of Blood is a brilliant telling of ghost and emotional exploration of life and death.

The Midnight Meat Train is an exploration of the darkness hidden below us, mixed with the descriptive gore of brutality.

Pig Blood Blues is a perfect tale of imagination mixed with the emotional reality of Lord of the Flies and the darkness of Human understanding of evil and spirituality. A darkness that is an undercurrent of human belief and ultimate sacrifice to something more than us.

The Yattering and Jack is a comical tale of good and evil. A funny example of a demon trying to upset the balance of mundane life and to bring a human to a breaking point. To me this is the lessor of the stories. I found this one funny at times and yet felt it to be boring and useless in the collection of the stories.

Sex, Death and Sunshine is a great Ghost story. One of the great descriptive realities of the 5 stories. Barker is able to create an erotic sexuality mixed inside a story of ghost and the walking dead. This is like a Phantom of the Opera with a modern day twist of lust and the desire to create the ultimate piece of Theater.

Next In the Hills, the Cities, is a fantasy based story dealing with a unique reality and comes with great characters and an interesting imaginative ending.

How I read it: Kindle

Book Length: 179 pages

Would I Recommend: Absolutely. This should be read by any fan of horror and anthology books. A great twisted reality of interesting stories with sex, violence, humor and imaginative darkness that lingers long after the stories are over.

My Rating:

The Book of Blood: 4 out of 5
The Midnight Meat Train: 3.5 out of 5
The Yattering and Jack: 2.5 out of 5
Pig Blood Blues: 5 out of 5
Sex, Death and Sunshine: 4 out of 5
In the Hills, the Cities: 3.5 out of 5
